In addition to providing support so that each person with a disability can work happily and enthusiastically just like others, Nitto Group established the special subsidiary Himawari Group at six sites and research centers in Japan so that “people with disabilities can live an independent work life.” (Six sites at four companies as of September 2023.)
In addition to continuing to employ local people with disabilities at each site, we closely partner with their families, special needs schools, support organizations, the government, local residents, and parties related to Nitto to hire and retain these employees.
Nitto Group aims to continue to work with Himawari Group to create workplaces in which everyone, whether or not they have a disability, can happily and enthusiastically play an active role.
"Himawari" is sunflower in Japanese.
As of September 2023, there were 276 employees with disabilities working at Nitto Group, and each and every one of these employees is involved in operations critical for business. Employees with disabilities account for 3.5% of Nitto’s workforce, which dramatically exceeds the statutory level of 2.3%. Furthermore, operations handled by Himawari Group are growing every year, and their employees routinely conduct a broad range of operations linked to business appropriate for the type of disability, such as cleaning production equipment and creating samples for customers.
Leveraging the convenience offered by various special subsidiaries, Hiwamari Group is not only deepening understanding of the various systems for people with disabilities and the current state of and issues faced by people with disabilities but also promoting activities to evolve this in a stable manner.
Employees with any of various disabilities, such as physical, mental, or developmental disabilities, are involved in a wide range of operations, including printing business cards, converting documents into PDF file, cleaning buildings, managing green areas, collecting mail within the facility, carrying out general operations, and providing social service support.

Some staff members use sign language, and cafe customers actively take on the challenge of communicating with these staff members using sign language, which has transformed the cafe into a valuable venue for exchanges.
Each site holds a Himawari Appreciation Event in the autumn, and surrounded by sunflowers that the employees have grown, family members, special needs school–related parties, and local supporters look back at the activities conducted during the year.
In order to further foster a sense of unity within Himawari Group, a committee composed of a representatives selected by each group company was created. This provides a venue for regularly sharing issues faced by each company and discussing improvements.
Such outside activities as holding lecture meetings for outside parties, conducting plant tours and training, and providing society with the know-how regarding employing people with disabilities that Nitto has acquired contribute to expanding employment opportunities for people with disabilities through collaboration within the whole Nitto Group.
