Environmental Management

Basic Policy on Environment

Protecting our planet to pass on to future generations.

-Aim at zero environmental impact over the entire supply chain and contribute to the development of a sustainable society-

The Nitto Group will endeavor to do the following:

  • To reduce the environmental impact of business activities continuously by understanding and managing the impact over the entire supply chain.
  • To contribute to the establishment of the recycling-based society through efficient use of resources.
  • As a member of the local community, strive to preserve the environment and harmonize with nature.
  • To fulfill our corporate responsibility, proactively disclose environment-related technologies and information to promote communication regarding the environment.
  • To fulfill corporate social responsibility by observing the laws of each country and region as well as relevant international standards and self-imposed management regulations.

Basic Ideas

No manufacturing business can avoid impacting the environment through the use of energy and resources or the emission of CO2 and waste. Meanwhile, climate change and other environmental challenges are rapidly emerging. Working to reduce environmental impact is a social mission for businesses and, as such, we must constantly apply originality and ingenuity.

The Nitto Group laid out in the Basic Policy on Environment its intention to aim at zero environmental impact by expanding the scope of its activities from within the Group to cover the entire supply chain and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society as it taps into its proprietary technologies and knowledge thus far accumulated.

In order to promote these initiatives, it is essential that each employee understands the environmental impact of their work. Therefore, we aim to continually raise environmental awareness through training and education programs. Additionally, we will promote regular disclosure of information to external stakeholders through TCFD recommendations, which are in line with international information disclosure standards and our Sustainability Data Book.

Additionally, when expanding our business through M&A, we will identify potential environmental risks and conduct due diligence to address them appropriately.

Promotion System

To solve environmental issues, the Nitto Group has built a governance structure where the Corporate Strategy Meeting plays the central role with instructions and supervision from the Board of Directors. It is with this structure that we draw up short-term and mid- and long-term strategies.

To enhance the effectiveness of our environmental initiatives, we have set up the Global Green Committee chaired by the officer in charge of environmental affairs. Working alongside departments that oversee ESG management and procurement, as well as business execution departments and regional headquarters, this Committee develops strategies and implements and promotes measures to solve issues.

The Board of Directors is responsible for decision-making regarding Environmental management policies as well as material matters related to Environmental management indicators and targets, such as the mid-term management plan and support for initiatives. Each quarter, it provides periodic directions, and conducts supervision, concerning the Environmental targets (future-financial targets) of the mid-term management plan as well as the status of progress toward target achievement, and, as necessary, takes additional steps if a material matter arises.

The Corporate Strategy Meeting, chaired by the President and CEO, is responsible for deliberation and decision-making regarding specific policies and measures for action based on Environmental management policies and indicators, as well as managing risks and opportunities and monitoring initiative progress on a monthly basis. It provides periodic reports––on a quarterly basis––to the Board of Directors about the content of its deliberations and decisions and the progress of initiatives, and, as necessary, provides additional reports if a material matter arises.

We appoint an officer in charge of promoting Environmental initiatives, and also have a special function department responsible for implementing those initiatives that serves as a department in charge of the environment. The Nitto Group's governance structure is as follows.

Targets

Climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing humanity, posing significant future risks to both the environment and corporate management. In 2022, the Nitto Group declared its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, aiming to contribute to a decarbonized society through the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Regarding GHG (CO2) emissions (Scope 1 + 2) within our own operations, we aim to reduce them to 400,000 tons by 2030, representing a 46.3% reduction compared to 2020 levels. Our ultimate goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and we will accelerate efforts to reduce GHG (CO2) emissions accordingly. Furthermore, to support decarbonization across society, we aim to reduce GHG (CO2) emissions (Scope 3) within our supply chain to 1.46 million tons by 2030, which is a 25% reduction compared to 2022 levels.

At the Nitto Group, approximately 50% of waste is petroleum-derived plastic products. We aim to realize a circular society by reducing consumption of natural resources and promoting efficient use and recycling. For this reason, we have set a recycling rate for waste plastic as an environmental target and are actively working towards it. Additionally, in order to respond to rising raw material prices, the risk of difficulties in procuring them, and the growing demand for technologies and products related to the circular use of resources and materials, we have set environmental targets for the sustainable material procurement ratio.

Specifically, we are steadily progressing with our initiatives, aiming for a 60% waste plastic recycling ratio and a 30% sustainable material procurement ratio by 2030.

Environment Targets

Environmental Management System

To achieve its environmental targets, the Nitto Group's environmental departments within each business operating entity take the lead in carrying out environment and safety activities in accordance with ISO 14001, with the company-wide environmental department promoting and supporting these activities.

We have obtained ISO 14001 certification in order to effectively implement environmental initiatives, including PDCA, improving environmental performance, preventing pollution, and complying with environmental laws and regulations. By March 2001, all domestic business locations and major domestic group companies had obtained certification.

Additionally, our overseas offices are currently in the process of obtaining certification, with all offices in Europe having completed certification.

*Please see here for the certification status.

Initiatives

Environmental Labeling

The Nitto Group uses environmental labeling to make environmental information about its products visible.

PlanetFlags

The Nitto Group has developed a new certification scheme for products that contribute to the environment and humanity. By visualizing the environmental contribution of the products and services produced by the Nitto Group and certifying products and services that make an especially large contribution as PlanetFlags, we will materialize our initiatives in addressing key sustainability issues.

Green Procurement

The Nitto Group places great importance on consideration for global environmental conservation in its procurement activities in order to fulfill its corporate social responsibilities. Our "Basic Procurement Policy," which outlines our procurement activities, stipulates that we will promote green procurement as part of our initiatives to protect the global environment. By promoting green procurement, we provide our customers with environmentally friendly products and contribute to protecting the global environment throughout the entire supply chain.

Raising environmental awareness among employees

In order to promote environmental initiatives, the understanding and cooperation of each and every employee is essential. Therefore, we aim to continually raise environmental awareness through training and education programs.

Training and education programs

In addition to providing specialized training for the Environmental Control Department and handling of hazardous substances, we also provide e-learning-based educational programs aimed at promoting understanding of the impact of business activities on the environment and ecosystems and the initiatives being made to address these issues. Up until now, the target audience was a part of employees who were judged to be required to take the course, but from the 2024 fiscal year onwards, the target audience will be expanded to all employees in Japan and globally, in an effort to improve literacy and environmental awareness.

In-house environmental awareness activities

At the Nitto Group, we are working to raise environmental awareness based on the idea that in order to promote environmental initiatives and achieve our environmental targets, it is important for each employee to take environmental issues personally and act in conjunction with their work.

Environment Day
Every Thursday is designated as Environment Day. Employees will wear environmental awareness badges and give talks on environmental topics at the beginning of meetings and during lunch meetings. Employees are encouraged to think about and talk about the environment on their own initiative to raise environmental awareness. (Applicable to sites in Japan).
Environmental Week
Starting in fiscal year 2019, we have designated a week of events called "Nitto Environment Week" to coincide with World Environment Day on June 5th each year. We hold events based on company-wide themes each year, such as recycling, reducing food waste, and eco-friendly life. Additionally, each site is taking part in a variety of initiatives to raise environmental awareness.
*Please refer to the site environmental activities page for details.
