Conserving Biodiversity

Basic Ideas

The Nitto Group considers "biodiversity conservation" to be a key sustainability issue, and is working to minimize the overall negative impact of its corporate activities on the global environment and ecosystems, as well as to prevent the decline of biodiversity.

We support the "Keidanren Declaration for Biodiversity and Guideline," and are currently formulating activity targets, focusing on preventing air pollution and preserving water resources.

Prevention of Air Pollution

[Prevention of Air Pollution]
We will reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) in order to minimize the impact of VOC on the environment around our business sites and on the health of our employees.
[Reducing the use of chemical substances]
We will promote the elimination of solvents by using UV-curable adhesives and water-based adhesives, and will also strive to further reduce VOC by curbing the use of hazardous substances based on our voluntary management standards.
[Contribution to society]
We contribute to reducing environmental pollution by providing separation technologies such as membrane separation.

Conservation of Water Resource

[Water resource conservation]
We will reduce water withdrawal through efficient water use. We will strive to conserve water resources by investigating water resource conditions and assessing risks at all sites.
[Response to water risks]
We will establish a monitoring and surveillance system to deal with water risks such as water pollution and water stress, and strive to prevent the discharge of harmful substances.
[Contribution to society]
By establishing and deploying water reuse technologies, such as applied membrane separation technology, we contribute to ensuring safe drinking water for local communities and preventing environmental pollution.

Technology for cyclic use of water

We are focusing on water reuse and zero-discharge (ZLD) in order to use water resources efficiently and minimize the impact on business activities of water supply restrictions due to abnormal weather, etc. At the Shiga Plant, we reuse wastewater and effluent generated at the plant using water treatment technology that utilizes the Nitto Group's reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, which does not allow impurities other than water to pass through. The wastewater utilization rate will reach 90% from 2022 onwards.

Going forward, we plan to roll out products incorporating the technologies and schemes that we have established and verified in-house to emerging countries and other countries and regions with high water risks. Furthermore, by combining these water treatment technologies with other environmental technologies, we will contribute to solving social issues through our business, such as ensuring safe and secure water and conserving water resources.

Water risk monitoring

The water used in our manufacturing processes impacts local water sources. Excessive water use and pollution pose risks of negative impacts on ecosystems and local communities.

The Nitto Group recognizes the importance of monitoring water risks at its manufacturing sites. We aim for a sustainable future by understanding water usage and quality through Aqueduct (floods, droughts, water resources, etc.) and internal EPDS (water intake, wastewater, COD, etc.).
